About this site

This website was created by William Boos at Yale University, with financial support from National Science Foundation CAREER award AGS-1253222.  Technical support and hosting are provided by Yale’s Instructional Technology Group.

Data presented on this website come from various sources:

  • Current winds are obtained from the latest daily operational analysis of the U.S. National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP).
  • Current precipitation is obtained from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA) product
  • Deterministic forecasts are obtained from the Global Forecast System (GFS), a numerical weather prediction model produced by NCEP.
  • Probabilistic forecasts are obtained from the GFS Ensemble; the bias-corrected precipitation is used
  • The banner image on all pages is a cloud mosaic from July 10, 2013, at the time of active rainfall in the South Asian monsoon and the occurence of supertyphoon Soulik in the West Pacific.  The mosaic of the visible cloud field was observed by multiple geostationary satellites and stitched together by the Xplanet project.  The cloud mosaic is overlaid on NASA’s Blue Marble true-color image of the Earth’s surface.
